Oscar Pistorius Highlights Culture of Crime in South Africa
I attended the trial today in Pretoria- in fact anyone can go into the overflow of the court and see Oscar speaking live –it’s called “ open justice” and it must be really the worst experience of his life. Today I watched how Oscar explained to his defense attorney (they go first)-the prosecutor will get his chance in the next day or so… He looked tearful at times…speaking with a respectful tone to the judge… open…transparent…answering the questions to the best of his ability… generally trying to give his version of the events…
Mr. Le Roux began by asking him if he had ever taken any drugs or sports enhancing medication …to which Oscar replied “ No”- THEN it went to his early life , his good relationship with his mother… the fact that he had never been in trouble with the law… generally establishing his good character to the court…which he did… then the main structure of his defense centered on the culture of violence in south Africa and his experiences with it… incidents like how he saved a guy who was being beaten to death by some bystanders… to highjackings and thefts of his friends and associates… to describing his home in Johannesburg and in Pretoria… how he bought it…etc… but what I found quite interesting is that if it is all true about how bad and how violent it is in south Africa…which…I think he is being honest about to some degree…( although myself I’ve never carried a gun and I walk and travel everywhere around Johannesburg including Hillbrow- Soweto- etc…I don’t say Joburg is safe…it’s not…but over the 40 years of living here… I’ve only been mugged twice – at night … and never hurt… I’m not saying there aren’t thefts or hijacking …there is… but I can see where Mr. Le Roux IS GOING WITH THIS… HE IS SHOWING THE COURT THAT THERE WAS A GENUINE BELIEF IN THE DANGEROUSNESS OF SOUTH AFRICA… and that is the basis of his defense strategy… reasonable belief that there was an intruder and the utter fear and paranoia as a disabled person that his life was in danger…
And it is a valid point. The fact that the Africa Unite Party was outside protesting against violence in South Africa is another point. But it was largely ignored by the main stream press who were more concerned about some journalists rotting away in jail in Egypt. In fact so cynical are these vultures that afterwards when we were chilling out at a local bar…one said: “How’s this sound” OSCAR PISTORIUS- THE CHRISTIAN DOGLOVER!” yes…we can laugh…and the black jokes abound… in including one guy I met in the lift who said…” Oscar is gonna walk!”… ( meaning he will go free)…but not….since he can’t walk… ( sic)
The point is …when it suits people ..they will use the violence in our country as an excuse…and when it doesn’t suit it…they will ignore it and live a separate life..disconnected from the real world around us… and that is why…once again… we say… engage in politics…get involved… don’t sit on the sidelines … today we engaged in the Oscar trial as a party because it is ALL about violence in this country… and the culture of corruption which has led to the current bad state of the nation…thanks to the ANC and its bad policies.
But for Oscar to use this as an excuse why he shot Reeva is a bit of a strange and weird anomaly… when it suits our purposes …we say: oh… look how violent a country we live in… when it doesn’t… we simply ignore it… and that’s the problem I have with Oscars defense… the truth is … he shot through a shut door… he didn’t give a warning or fire a warning shot…he shot to kill proving he was not in his right mind… he knew who was behind that door and he shot her…not intentionally perhaps- but out of anger…out of insanity…part of the culture of violence and crime …perhaps a product of its paranoia fueled by racial hatred and bad perceptions… and that’s what we as a party are against… any racially motivated violence.
I believe Oscar cannot use this as a defense to justify his actions…he should simply say… I am a product of the society I was a born into… racially prejudiced, closed and aggressive…to the point where anything can happen… including murder.
I know it must not be easy for him …he is on the spot right now…and I wish him the best… but the fact is … he killed this woman and he should pay for his crime… I don’t think it was premeditated…I think it was simply a moment of utter madness. I am glad he hasn’t lost his faith in God. He stated God is HIS REFUGE… AND I BELIEVE HIM…… but he shot the woman he loved in a fit of rage… and yes, he regrets it… and yes, there is reasonable doubt…call it temporary insanity…but he killed her…a crime of passion as they say in France. Tomorrow should be more interesting as he takes the stand again…but he can’t use the culture of crime and violence in south Africa as the basis of his defense…it simply does not wash… sorry. He can’t save what is lost… its gone. He may get off…but I frankly feel he killed her in a flash of insanity…that’s it… he’s got anger issues.
And he’s human…but he killed her…and I believe he knew who it was behind that door.
Our party went today to Pretoria to protest against violence of all kinds… and we achieved our goal. We recruited new members… I spoke to around 40 people at once ... and our signs were ripped down by the court security- a Mr. XULU and thrown in the garbage… BUT…we didn’t give up… we were there the whole day.
And because we were there to stand up for violence and hate speech in this country…I believe we did make a difference..albeit a small one… but a difference that will be remembered …today we are exactly one month old as a party… and as such we have shown the world that small as we are…we aren’t afraid to manifest what we believe in…
So yes… THE AUP IS HERE TO STAY!- and we are growing …every day!
sincerley,
Robin D.
